THAT’S the verdict of one industry leader who spoke to Australian Conveyancer about lessons from the Federal Election.

As AIC VIC President Shakila Maclean cast an eye over the landslide, she noted that that it was down to conveyancers to look after themselves.

“Australia has just witnessed one of the most significant political shifts in 125 years—an opposition leader unseated for the first time in federal election history,” she said.

“Few predicted this outcome, but in times of global instability, as Bill Shorten noted, Australians chose the “devil they know.”

“Labor has secured a decisive majority with at least 86 seats, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has vowed to “govern for every Australian.”

Lessons from the election: Trust, Clarity & Connection Matter

“While everyone’s focused on policy promises, the REAL question is: What are YOU doing to future-proof your practice regardless of who wins?

“If this election taught us anything, it’s that clear messaging and connection build confidence. As the Liberal Party found out, being unclear or inconsistent in your message creates doubt—and in times of uncertainty, people won’t take chances.

“The same applies to our industry. In this economic climate, new clients won’t risk their biggest transaction with a business they don’t fully trust or understand.

“If your conveyancing practice doesn’t communicate value, care, and professionalism clearly and consistently, potential clients will stay with who they know—or worse, move on.

“But this lesson doesn’t just apply to new clients. Clear, ongoing communication is just as vital for existing ones. If you take your clients for granted—if you go quiet, become transactional, or drop the ball on service—they will decide with their feet. Just like voters did.

“Loyalty has to be earned and reinforced.

“Now is the time to ensure your messaging is sharp, your brand is strong, and your clients feel seen, supported, and secure.”

With the end of financial year fast approaching, according to Shakila, now is the time to assess and realign:

  • Are your business expenses justified?
  • Are any subscriptions underused or unnecessary?
  • Can you improve workflows or use technology to increase output?

“Take a fresh look at the entire client experience. Is it seamless? Timely? Are you clearly communicating your expertise and care from first contact through to settlement? Small refinements now could make a big difference to your bottom line later.”

Support Your Team – and Future-Proof Your Practice

“Behind every great practice is a strong team. Prioritise staff wellbeing, morale, and development. Encourage innovation, celebrate progress, and create space for feedback.

“It’s in these moments of reflection and recalibration that great businesses position themselves for growth.

Looking ahead, let’s treat EOFY not just as a compliance task, but as a turning point—an opportunity to strengthen the way we work, communicate, and serve.

“In a world where trust, clarity, and consistency are more valuable than ever, now is the time to show your clients exactly why they should choose you—and keep choosing you.”
