Busiest residential builders revealed in new report
Businesses on the Housing 100 builders list together delivered a combined 64,407 homes in 2024/25, up 11 per cent from last year’s 58,011.

AUSTRALIA’S busiest builder has been unveiled in a new report by the Housing Industry Association.
Metricon Homes has taken the top slot as the number one builder in the HIA’s Housing 100 for the 10th year in a row.
The Victoria-based builder reported 4,015 new home starts across four states in 2024/25.
HIA Chief Economist Tim Reardon said: “This marks a decade of consistent performance.”
ABN Group was in second place, delivering 3,530 homes, consolidating its strength across Western Australia and Victoria.
Billionaire Harry Triguboff’s Meriton Apartments ranked third with 3,029 homes, underlining the gradual re-emergence of multi-unit construction in Sydney and Queensland.
The announcement will come as good news for the government and its plans to build 1.2 million homes by 2029 as part of the Housing Accord. Most recent reports have highlighted a flagging construction sector.
Metricon chief executive Brad Duggan said the results marked the first year of growth in Metricon site starts since the beginning of the Covid pandemic in 2019-20 – and that it signalled renewed momentum in what has been a “highly challenging market”.
Together, the Housing 100 builders delivered 64,407 homes in 2024/25, up 11 per cent from last year’s 58,011.
Key findings from the 2024/25 Housing 100 include:
- Detached homes rose by 4.5 per cent to 46,944 starts.
- Semi-detached homes increased by 24 per cent to 6,443 starts.
- Multi-units surged by nearly 40 per cent to 11,020 starts.
- The Housing 100 accounted for 36 per cent of the new home market, slightly down from 38 per cent in 2023/24.
“The achievements of the Housing 100 are cause for optimism,” Reardon said.
“This year saw more homes built, more builders expanding their activity, and growth across detached, semi-detached and multi-unit segments.”
State results reveal a diverse picture:
- Victoria led the way with 20,192 starts, 31 per cent of Housing 100 activity.
- New South Wales recorded 14,295 starts, equal to 22 per cent of the list’s output.
- Queensland also contributed 22 per cent, with 13,951 starts.
- Western Australia builders delivered 9,903 starts, accounting for 46 per cent of the state’s total – the highest market share nationally.
- South Australia recorded 5,349 starts, 40 per cent of the state’s total.
“With interest rates easing, population growth strong and construction costs stabilising, the outlook for home building is positive,” added Reardon.
