Mosely leads by example to lift up the next generation

Susanne Mosely is Managing Director of Hunter Legal & Conveyancing, based in the NSW city of Maitland, about 35km northwest of Newcastle.

She has more than 25 years in the industry, starting as a paralegal in her father’s law firm Philip W. Hill & Associates.

Mosely took the reins in 2014, rebranding and expanding into what is now an award-winning team of “14 amazing women”.

She was inspired by her father: “The customer service and personal attention he gave to his clients.” This commitment is vital, she says.

“Every client has a different journey, a different story that I get to be a part of,” Mosely adds.

“Walking alongside them knowing what I do can make such a difference in that journey is so satisfying.”

Not just guiding those with property transactions, “but supporting others through the harder seasons in life and being able to take the stress and burden off them through those times.”

Mosely qualified as a licensed conveyancer in 1999 and is passionate about helping her team to “have it all” as wives, mothers, lawyers and conveyancers.

“I love the team I work with and raising up a group of young women embarking on the beginning of their careers,” she says, “knowing I can mentor and support them to have a family life and a career.”

Among the many business challenges is the constant change, including AML compliance, new technology and cybersecurity.

Her advice is not to shy away: “Tackle it head on and evolve, adapt to the changing industry needs and client expectations without compromising quality service.

“Embrace the right tools, navigate the integration of technology, find that right balance of innovation and tradition.”

Mosely’s daughter Sophie graduated last year to become HLC’s youngest licensed conveyancer at the age of 20, and the third generation in the family business.

So what’s Mosely’s advice for anyone considering the profession?

“Develop strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills,” she says. “Find the right mentor and join a team of like-minded professionals.

“It’s a journey of self-discovery and building skills so say ‘yes’ to opportunities and surround yourself with a network that builds you up.“
